Air Conditioning

Is you a/c not cooling properly, do you feel a/c air circulation., and do you hear noise from your blowers? Here in South Texas, the temperature raises quickly in 100's in the summer months. So as the heat rises, the sun heats up metal, glasses, and makes the inside of a vehicle extremely hot and dangerous for a driver over the road.

The air condition system on a commercial vehicle is quite simple.

  1. Control Panel Switch - Most trucks have a on and off switch to control fan setting and temperature and different options. A bad control panel can cause a/c compressor is kicking in and out.
  2. Evaporator - Can be called evaporator coil or core, is where the refrigerant absorbs heat. Evaporators can be found near blower fan. Most evaporator are u shapes tubing made of copper, steel, or aluminum set into panel. A dirty evaporator can cause ice. excess water will drip down the coil into cab. A good cleaning can make a big difference.
  3. Compressor - Compressor compresses the refrigerant and deliver it to A/C condenser. Compressor has a pulley that is driven with a belt by engine crankshaft.
  4. Condenser - Cool the refrigerator is the main function of condenser. Condenser are placed between truck grill and motor for proper air flow to cool system to get ready to move into evaporator inside the dash to cool cabin and sleeper.
  5. Expansion Valve - Also known as orifice tube is a control that regulates Freon flow thru entire truck a/c system. Expansion valve removes pressure from Freon to allow expansion so it can change from liquid to vapor. A bad expansion valve can cause warm air, frost on ac evaporator, and a/c compressor that does not shut of properly like it should. Expansion valve should not be cleaned. Any debris can contaminate the entire system, which can prevent proper flow.
  6. Drier Receiver - Dryer serves as a temporary storage for freon and also filters the removal of moisture and debris in the a/c system. If water gets in system it will be stored in drier. Once full it will need to be replaced. Check for any signs of leaking refrigerant, rattling noise, or a molding smell in a/c system. We replace drier every time we replace a/c compressor. Drier has a material called desiccant, used to absorb moisture. Driers can be found in the high pressure side of the a/c system.
  7. High & Low Pressure switches - Both Pressure switch protect switches for the compressor and refrigeration circuit. High pressure switch checks system for a dirty or restricted condenser. A defective high pressure switch can cause a/c compressor to cut in and out while you idle. Pressure switches can be tested by pulling wire connectors and test with a resistance.
