Five Main Components of An Air System

1. Brake Drums and Shoes - Create friction needed for braking.

With brakes applied, The S Cam rotated so high that the can rollers and force shoes to rub against the drum. Brakes shoes generate heat through friction with drum. We can reuse drums on certain equipment, replace just shoe and spring kit. Weak or broken springs, improper lining, poor adjustment, grease and dirt can break brake components.

2. Air Compressor - Builds up and maintains air pressure

Air compressor are either belt driven or gear driven from the engine. Some air compressor are air cooled and other self-lubricated. Compressor have their own filtration system that needs to be serviced properly. The air governor with load or unload compressor. The governor must exit pumping stage when air pressure system reaches 120 to 145 psi. Air compressor have a crankshaft, piston and ring assembly with an inlet valve and exhaust valve.

3. Brake Chamber - Transfer force of compressed air to mechanical linkages.

Brake Chamber convert compressed air pressure energy into a mechanical force and movement when the brakes are applied. Brake Chamber are made of inlets ports, diaphragm, return spring, mounting bolts, with a push rod assembly with a yoke and nut.

4. Foot Valve - Draw compressed air from reservoirs when it is needed for braking

A foot valve is composed of a treadle that is stepped on to engage supply and delivery of air. Valve has an exhaust port.

5. Air Reservoir - Store compressed air

Air tank range in different sizes and shapes. Tank must allow sufficient air for several applications of brakes. Each reservoir has a drain valve to remove moisture everyday.
