Frame extension on a 2007 Peterbilt 379 at our truck shop

Some truck owners like to stretch the chassis of their truck just for looks however many upgrade their truck for a special purpose like hauling certain types of freight such as steel beams, trusses, and poles.

One exception to the statement above is Mr Anthony's custom painted red Peterbilt show truck which we customized into an eye catching red show truck that rules the highways of America when it comes to looks. Howevere, this is not all that this truck can do.

It can also be used as a heavy hauler to transport huge machinery and heavy equipment across America.

In more than fifty percent of the cases in which truck drivers opt for a frame extension on their truck, the objective is to enhance the abilities of the truck and make it a speciality truck.

For example in case of heavy haulers that carry potatoes one needs to get a frame extension done along with various other customizations before a potato box can be installed on the truck.

A frame extension is also needed when you need to add a specialty bed to your truck like in dump trucks, flatbed trucks, dry vans and water tanks etc.

The image above depicts a Peterbilt truck owned by one of our customers, Mr Anthony Mclean who got a Custom frame extension done on his truck along custom red paint, custom fenders and LED lights.

Over the past thirty years, we have done countless frame extensions. we see them often while driving on the highway. Their owner's feedback has been excellent. More than 80% of our clients return to us with more truck and trailer repair work for us. They give us more work on the same truck or other trucks that they own in their fleet.

The image to the right is of a potato truck from Mr Reye's fleet of potato haulers.

Mr Reyes who owns multiple potato haulers which he uses to transport potatoes from his feilds to the Frito Lay factory brought his truck from Indiana which rolled over out on location. All his trucks have undergone a frame extension at our truck repair shop before the potato box is installed. We removed the potato box and cab to start repairs.

The image below is how this truck looked when it was brought down from Indiana after the accident.

We got a used cab installed and changed all the interior. We repaired the box and installed it back on the truck. Painters gave this beauty a new baby blue custom paint job with some stripes. We built this truck for our customers many years ago. We did a frame extension on this truck back then before we put the potato box on it. Now we restored it back and our customer Reyes is ready to start the potato hauling season.

Tools needed for frame extension are forklifts, torches, plasma torches, grinders, jack stands, hydraulic jacks, magnetic drill presses, welders, etc. Our frame extension experts are equipped with all these tools and equipments needed to carry out frame extension in your truck.

During the process of frame extension or chassis stretch, we use the method of adding the frame chassis to the rear of the truck. The next step in this process is to unbolt the complete suspension and roll it out of the way. And then we attach the new frame chassis, which gives us only one weld instead of two. When the frame extension is done correctly, it will last for a lifetime without any issues. Frame extension can also be done using the " Cut in the middle " technique which is relatively cheaper.

However, we prefer the one weld method as it is more reliable and long lasting. We have made frames longer and shorter to modify for custom beds. We make custom trucks into dump trucks, water trucks, crane trucks, and flatbed trucks.

We have stretched over 5000 frames over the last thirty years. we feel great pride when we see one of our frame extension truck on the road. We remove rear section of axles with suspension. We add frame to make length desired. If it hauls heavy, we add a L inside frame from front to back. This allows us the space need to drill out new holes. No holes are ever cut with the torch. We install grade 8 bolts with metal locknut.

The red Peterbilt heavy hauler show truck's first load that we customized for Mr Anthony Mclean

This image to the left depicts Mr Anthony's first load after we added a third axle and frame extension. Mr Anothony came from out of town with a Peterbilt and a vision of how he wanted his Peterbilt to look like after customization. Jorge, the owner and a virtuoso of the truck repair and customization domain and Mr Anthony went through the truck. Got some time to measure frame and see what needed to be done to make sure this truck would work to move heavy loads through out the US. Anthony and Jorge sat down wrote all needed parts and made schedule of what order each additions would be installed. Anthony came in from out of town several times to check. We exchanged lots of pictures, video chats, and text daily thru the entire project. We did a frame extension, added a 3rd axle, change exhaust, did a minor paint job to truck cab, and got this truck dot ready. Anthony was able to purchase a heavy duty trailer with 5 axles. With a 5 axle trailer and 4 axle truck, not sure what Anthony can't haul. Anthony picked up his truck from our shop, put plates, permits, and decals. After that he left our shop, loaded and headed to his 1st job. We are so happy to see our work on the road working in the best industry, moving America's products from coast to coast. We take great pride in our heavy haulers. Blessings and stop by and see us Mr. Anthony.

The primary reason why truck drivers choose to get frame extension done on their trucks is not merely to get noticed on the highway for its looks. However we can make it a show truck too and make it useful for heavy hauling at the same time.

Some customers like to overlap chassis five feet on each inside where the frame was added for more reliability and peace of mind. Lots of parts go into a frame extension - frames, drive lines, air lines, wiring, air fittings, grade eight bolt, crossmember to name a few and many more. We can also remove an old aluminum frame and install a heavy duty metal frame on any truck of any make or model. We also remove single frames and install double frames in any truck of any make or model.

Double frame is a C channel inside another C channel. This is for higher GVWR vehicles, this will have more flexibility on rough terrain. Frame thickness varies from 3/8 and thicker with all different heights. From start to finish, a frame extension takes lots of hours of work. Unit is measured upon arrival. Owner and Jorge talk about length desired and make sure application of truck weight is correct. Post this, estimate and options are discussed.

Once the frame is extended additional air hoses will be added to ensure the air system works properly. The fifth wheel is removed and marked with the customer's name. We separate and mark all loose parts. The disassembled truck frame is cleaned with a wire brush and inspected for rust or any weaknesses on the original frame. Frames are cut at an angle of 45 degrees for more meat grab of metal. This angle has more structural strength. The Frames are welded, bolted, and have an inside frame piece of 5 ft on each side. Each hole needed is marked, drilled out by magnetic drill, and checked before installation of axles. Once holes are all accounted for, we install the suspension with a forklift, back on the truck frames. Once suspension is bolted on, we then take measurement to cut the drive shaft to resize or see if we need another one. We figure out if we need additional carrier bearings, yokes, u-joints, and crossmembers for proper alignment. Air system and electrical are reconnected and checked. Lots of air hoses are needed in addition to fit the new length. After that we work on deck plates, fish plates, additional lights, tool boxes, longer fuel tanks, and accessories. We also install custom light rear lights, you can bring parts or we will help you find what you envision. After the electrical system and air system are taken care of and the frame extension is complete; the truck is test driven to ensure all systems work perfectly.

This truck will be hauling potatoes from the field to the plant to be made into potatoes chips for Frito Lay. This is an addition to a family that owns several potato haulers trucks. Over the course of the past twenty five years, we have custom made several trucks with heavy specification for heavy hauling.
